There are various indices of measuring the popularity of a dog breed. The most preferred method to measure which are some of the most popular dog breeds in the world is to count the registration of the dogs and then figure out the top spots. This might not be an accurate method (as most countries do not make a compulsion on registering your pet), but this is one of the most reliable sources. Assuming that 50% pets in the world are not registered, we can extrapolate the numbers found out from the registered pets and then get a fairly accurate idea of the most popular dog breeds.

One dog breed that clearly stands out in the registration statistics of all the kennel clubs across continents is that of the Labrador retriever. With the average number of Labrador pets being twice or even three times the numbers of the breeds following in on the second spot, we can safely deduce that the Lab is undisputedly the most popular dog breed in the world.

Having exceptional intelligence, working capacity and being amiable and affectionate in nature has seen the Labs deployed in a lot of Special Forces to perform specific retrieval and detection tasks. Because the Labrador is a naturally patient dog, they really team up nicely with children and adults alike, therefore, this breed is a very popular home breed also. Labradors are pretty lazy if not made to exercise regularly, and might end up mustering up their dog beds all day long as they grow older. Labradors are also known for the ease with which they understand human signals and the manner in which they can be trained to do various tasks. An easy to manage dog breed, the Labradors are undoubtedly a hot favorite around the world.

The Golden retriever, having Labrador-like qualities and a denser coat, was initially developed as a hunting dog breed. It is basically a gun dog, which is known as a retrieval expert among the classes of dog trainers and owners. It is also an affectionate dog, mostly docile and gets along really well with other dog breeds and children. Due to its long hair and innocent looks, the dog is a personified example of the perfect dog. Such amiable and affable characteristics make the golden retriever the second most popular dog around the world according to registration statistics.

The boxer and the bulldog breeds are also two of the most popular dog breeds around. Known for the sulking, round-faced expression, the dogs are generally fun loving and quite docile as compared to the image they portray. At times though, these breeds have been known to have their own way and have even attacked their masters due to possessiveness for their belongings. It is due to their willful temperament that breeders are constantly trying to breed them in such a way that their intelligence and ease to learn remains while they are deprived of the aggressiveness in some way or the other. Some varieties have been developed successfully which satisfy these criterions, but these varieties are yet to be tested for age and health. Overall, the bull-dog clan is a really cute dog to own.
